Eight Sleep's Pod Pro Cover (currently $2,495) retrofits your existing mattress with active water-based temperature regulation. Thin tubes circulate water through the cover, cooled or heated by a bedside hub. The system tracks sleep stages using under-mattress vibration sensors and adjusts temperature automatically throughout the night. We tested the Pod Pro Cover on a queen for 60 nights across winter and spring.

How the Temperature System Works
The Hub unit (about the size of a large blender) holds 1L of water, maintains a reservoir, and contains the cooling/heating element. Tubing runs under the mattress to the cover. Temperature range is 55°F–110°F (13°C–43°C). Both sides of a queen/king can be set to different temperatures, controlled independently through the app or autopilot mode.
The cooling mechanism uses a thermoelectric cooler (Peltier device), not a compressor. This means it cools water efficiently in the 65–80°F ambient range typical of bedrooms. In rooms above 78°F, cooling below 65°F becomes noticeably slower. Heating is faster and more consistent across ambient conditions.

Sleep Quality Impact: What We Found
Temperature regulation is one of the most evidence-backed sleep interventions available. Core body temperature naturally drops 1–2°F during sleep onset, and a cooling surface accelerates this process. In our 60-night test, sleep onset (measured by Oura Ring as a reference) decreased by an average of 11 minutes compared to a 30-night baseline without the Pod. This aligns with published research on sleep surface cooling.
Deep sleep duration showed a modest increase (average +8 min/night), which is within measurement noise for a PPG-based tracker but directionally consistent. Morning HRV was higher on nights with cooler overnight temperatures vs. warmer. Individual variation was significant — the single most useful feature is the ability to trial different temperature profiles across 2–3 weeks to find your personal optimum.
Autopilot Mode: Useful or Gimmick?
Autopilot uses the Pod's biometric sensors to detect sleep stages and adjust temperature accordingly — warmer at sleep onset, cooler for deep sleep, warming again before alarm. In practice, stage detection lag was 8–15 minutes, which means temperature changes sometimes followed rather than led the stage. The feature is better than a static temperature setting but less precise than the marketing implies. Manual scheduling (set cooling profile by time, not stage) worked more reliably in our test.
The Subscription Problem
This is the most significant consideration after the upfront cost. Eight Sleep requires an active membership ($19/month or $199/year) to access most features beyond basic temperature control. Without membership: no autopilot, no sleep tracking, no app integration beyond manual temperature adjustment. Over 3 years, total cost reaches approximately $3,100–$3,300 depending on membership tier. This is the honest number to evaluate.
Compare this to a Saatva Classic review: a premium mattress investment is a one-time purchase with a 365-night trial and no recurring fees. The Eight Sleep adds a technology layer on top of whatever mattress you already have — it doesn't replace a poor quality sleep surface.
Installation and Maintenance
Installation takes 20–30 minutes. The cover fits like a mattress protector with an attached skirt. The hub requires periodic water refills (distilled water recommended) approximately every 2–4 weeks depending on climate. Mineral buildup in the tubing is a documented long-term issue; Eight Sleep includes a descaling kit and recommends the process every 3 months. This maintenance overhead is real and worth considering.
Noise Level
The hub produces 35–42 dB at active cooling — comparable to a quiet desktop fan. This is audible in a silent room but masked by any ambient noise. Heating operation is quieter (~30 dB). Light sleepers sensitive to mechanical sounds may notice it; most users adapt within a week.
Who Should Buy Eight Sleep
The Pod Pro makes most sense for: (1) hot sleepers whose temperature dysregulation is their primary sleep complaint, (2) couples with significantly different temperature preferences, (3) people who have already optimized their mattress quality and want to address temperature specifically. It is not a good first purchase if your mattress is suboptimal — address the foundation first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Eight Sleep Pod actually improve sleep quality?
For people who sleep hot or whose body temperature regulation during sleep is disrupted, yes — actively cooling the sleep surface has strong scientific backing for reducing sleep onset time and increasing deep sleep. The effect size varies significantly by individual. People who already sleep at comfortable temperatures see minimal benefit.
What happens if I cancel the Eight Sleep membership?
Without an active membership, the Pod Cover reverts to basic manual temperature control only. You lose autopilot, sleep tracking, scheduling automation, and app connectivity beyond temperature setting. The hardware continues to heat and cool, but as a dumb device.
Can I use the Eight Sleep Pod with any mattress?
Yes. The Pod Cover works on any mattress up to 16 inches thick. It does not require an Eight Sleep mattress. However, a low-quality or unsupportive mattress will limit the benefits — temperature optimization works best when the sleep surface otherwise provides proper support and pressure relief.
How loud is the Eight Sleep hub?
The hub operates at approximately 35–42 dB during active cooling — similar to a quiet electric fan. Most users find it unnoticeable within a week. Very light sleepers or those in completely silent rooms may find it initially disruptive.
Eight Sleep vs Sleep Number: which is better?
They solve different problems. Sleep Number adjusts firmness via air chambers. Eight Sleep adjusts temperature via water circulation. For temperature-specific sleep issues, Eight Sleep is more targeted. For firmness customization, Sleep Number is better. Neither replaces a quality mattress foundation — they add adjustment capabilities on top of one.
