What’s the size of a trundle bed?

What’s the size of a trundle bed?

A trundle bed is a low bed on casters which can be hidden away under a parent bed when not in use. Casters help it move in and out from under the main bed (or couch). Typically trundle bed mattresses are thinner than normal mattresses in order to allow them to fit (along with other bedding) under the parent bed. The typical size of a trundle bed is 38 in. x 75 in. x 4 in. tall because most trundle beds hold a twin size mattress. The mattress that goes on top of a trundle bed would then add another 6 in. in height so that the total height is approximately 10 in. from the bottom of the casters to the top of the mattress.

A daybed with a trundle is a sofa - bed hybrid. A daybed with trundle is one of the more common pieces of furniture used in a living room because it is so versatile. Here, the dimensions of the daybed are those of the 'couch' on top and the dimensions of the trundle bed are those of the hidden 'bed' underneath. Want to learn more about how to decorate your trundle daybed and make it look like a couch?

This trundle daybed provides typical dimensions for a trundle bed (twin size). Notice that some products on amazon will provide dimensions for the trundle bed alone, and others for the entire bed (with the trundle bed + the parent bed) . From amazon.com.

Size of a trundle bed with a daybed

Various sizes of daybeds are available on the market. Usually, a daybed measures a bit more than a standard sofa. A typical daybed measures around 38 inches by 75 inches. In centimeters, it is 98 cm by 191cm. These sizes are almost the same as of a twin bed mattress.

The dimensions of a full-size daybed with trundle is 56 in. x 77.5 in. x 41.5 inches. In general, full-size daybeds will have a twin sized trundle bed underneath with dimensions of 38 in. x 75 in. However, some come with full sized mattresses as well.

Do daybeds come in a queen or king size?

No, daybeds do not come in a queen or king size. However, you can use a pop up trundle bed to provide a large sleeping space by joining the daybed and the pop up trundle bed at one edge.

A daybed is a convertible furniture unit. You may want to put to queen or king-sized mattress on it, but that is practically not possible because you wouldn't be able to use it like a couch.

To enjoy the benefits of a larger bed with a daybed, consider buying a pop-up trundle bed. In a usual trundle daybed, the trundle rolls out to become a separate single bed which stays low to the floor. In a pop-up trundle bed, the trundle bed pops up to the same height as that of the parent bed. This way, the two mattresses are joined edge to edge and provide a lot of space for sleeping.

Trundle bed mattress sizes

Mattress sizes and what you can do on them
This great image from Casper provides an idea of what you can do on different mattress sizes. Trundle bed mattresses tend to be twin, twin XL, or full sizes.

Daybeds and trundle beds typically use twin mattresses as stated earlier. The dimensions of a twin mattress are 39 inches long and 75 inches wide. Some rarer daybeds have larger mattresses. The larger ones measure 54 inches wide and 75 inches long.

The height of the day bed mattress varies from 8 to 10 inches. However, the height of a trundle bed mattress underneath may vary between 6 to 8 inches. Note that the mentioned dimensions also gives you some space for tucking in a fitted sheet and quilt while setting the daybed.
