Helix Sunset: Firm Construction for Specific Sleepers

The Helix Sunset sits at the firm end of Helix's standard lineup, positioned for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who need a supportive, low-sink surface. At approximately $1,099 for queen (before frequent discounts), it competes in the mid-range hybrid category against established firm options from Saatva, WinkBeds, and others.

We tested the Sunset for 60 nights with two testers: a 185-lb stomach sleeper and a 220-lb back sleeper. The firmness profile stayed consistent throughout, which is the primary thing firm-mattress buyers need to verify.

Construction and Feel

The Sunset uses a pocketed coil support core (approximately 1,000 coils in queen), a 2-inch high-density foam layer, and a zoned memory foam comfort layer designed to provide slightly more give at the shoulders while maintaining firm support through the lumbar and hip region.

The overall feel is a traditional firm innerspring with modern motion isolation. It does not have the responsiveness of Saatva's dual coil system, but the pocketed coil construction handles motion isolation better than Bonnell coil competitors.

Helix Sunset vs Helix Plus: The Heavy Sleeper Question

This is the most important question for buyers over 200 lbs. The standard Sunset uses a coil gauge suited for sleepers up to approximately 250 lbs. Above that threshold, the coil system begins to compress more than the firmness rating suggests, and the foam layers experience faster wear.

Helix Plus uses a reinforced coil gauge, higher-density foam layers, and a broader edge support system. For sleepers over 230 lbs, the Plus line is the more appropriate choice despite the higher price. For sleepers in the 180-230 lb range, the standard Sunset performs as advertised.

60-Night Test Results

Our 185-lb stomach sleeper: Excellent lumbar support throughout. The zoned foam prevented excessive hip sinking while providing enough shoulder give to reduce morning stiffness. Strong recommendation for this use case.

Our 220-lb back sleeper: Good lumbar support but the firmness was near the upper limit of comfort for this body weight. By night 45, preferred slightly more give. The Saatva Classic Firm or WinkBeds Firmer at this weight range may provide better long-term comfort.

Who Should and Should Not Buy the Helix Sunset

Good fit: Stomach sleepers 140-220 lbs, back sleepers who want a genuine firm feel, couples where one partner needs firm and the other is also a firm/stomach sleeper.

Poor fit: Side sleepers (any weight), back sleepers over 230 lbs (consider Helix Plus), couples with very different firmness preferences (Helix offers split firmness in their custom options).

Frequently Asked Questions

What firmness is the Helix Sunset?

The Helix Sunset is rated firm, approximately 7.5-8/10 on a standard firmness scale. It is Helix's firmest standard model, designed for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who want minimal sink with strong lumbar support.

Is the Helix Sunset good for heavy sleepers?

For sleepers between 200-250 lbs, the standard Helix Sunset provides adequate support. For sleepers over 250 lbs, Helix recommends the Helix Plus line, which uses a reinforced coil system and higher-density foam specifically engineered for heavier body weight.

How does the Helix Sunset compare to the Helix Midnight?

The Helix Midnight is Helix's best-selling medium mattress designed for side sleepers. The Sunset is significantly firmer and targets stomach sleepers and back sleepers. They serve different sleep positions and are not interchangeable choices.

Does the Helix Sunset sleep hot?

The Helix Sunset uses a pocketed coil system that promotes good airflow. The cover has light moisture-wicking properties. We found it runs neutral to cool — similar to most coil-based hybrids and notably cooler than all-foam alternatives at this price.

What is the trial period for the Helix Sunset?

Helix offers a 100-night trial on the Sunset with free returns. The warranty is 10 years. White glove delivery is available as a paid add-on.
