Setting up a new mattress correctly ensures optimal performance, validates your warranty, and gets you to your best sleep faster. The setup process varies significantly by mattress type — a mattress-in-a-box requires different steps than a white-glove delivery. Here's the complete guide for every scenario.
Step 1: Prepare the Room Before Delivery
- Clear a path from the entrance to the bedroom — mattresses are awkward and heavy
- Measure doorways and hallways if you're in a smaller space (queen mattresses are 60" wide — not all hallways easily accommodate this)
- Have your bed frame/foundation ready and assembled before the mattress arrives
- Remove your old mattress first (schedule disposal before delivery day)
Step 2: Foundation/Frame Requirements
Check your mattress manufacturer's foundation requirements before setup — using the wrong foundation can void your warranty:
- Memory foam and latex: Require solid platform or slatted frames with slats no more than 3 inches apart. Box springs create insufficient support.
- Hybrid/innerspring: Compatible with box springs, platform beds, or slatted frames.
- Saatva Classic: Includes its own metal bed frame or requires an appropriate foundation — white-glove delivery includes setup verification.
- Adjustable bases: Verify mattress is compatible (flexible enough to articulate).
Step 3: Unboxing (For Mattress-in-a-Box)
- Move the box to the destination room first — much easier to maneuver boxed
- Stand the box on end and slide the mattress out
- Position the rolled mattress on the frame/foundation before cutting
- Cut outer plastic wrap carefully (avoid cutting deep — use scissors or a box cutter with 1" blade exposed)
- Cut the vacuum seal — the mattress expands immediately
- Remove all packaging and allow the mattress to expand
Step 4: Off-Gassing Period
Memory foam and synthetic materials release VOCs during their initial expansion period (off-gassing). This is normal and temporary:
- Ventilate the room — open windows if possible
- Allow 4-24 hours before sleeping on the mattress (or as long as the smell bothers you)
- CertiPUR-US certified foam has lower VOC levels — smell dissipates faster
- Natural latex has minimal off-gassing — usually ready within a few hours
- Saatva's white-glove delivery includes setup — the mattress is pre-aired during freight transport
Step 5: The Break-In Period
New mattresses need 30-60 days to break in — the comfort layers soften and conform to your body. During break-in:
- The mattress may feel firmer than expected initially — this is normal
- Body impressions that form within the first month are normal (not sagging)
- Most sleep trial policies require 30 days before initiating a return — they're accounting for break-in
- Rotate the mattress 180° after the first 30 days if it's a single-sided mattress
FAQ
How long before you can sleep on a new mattress?
For mattress-in-a-box: wait at least 4-8 hours after unboxing before sleeping, or until the mattress reaches approximately full expansion (90%+ of final size). For foam mattresses with strong off-gassing odor, wait until the smell dissipates (24-72 hours). For white-glove delivered mattresses (Saatva) that arrive pre-expanded: sleep on it immediately. Natural latex is ready within a few hours of unboxing.
How do you break in a new mattress faster?
Sleep on the mattress every night — this is the primary break-in method. Walking across the mattress on your knees helps work the comfort layers. Rotating the mattress every 2 weeks during break-in ensures even softening. Warm room temperature helps memory foam soften faster (the material responds to heat). Most mattresses require 30-60 days for the feel to stabilize at its intended comfort level.
What should I put under my new mattress?
Check your mattress warranty for foundation requirements — using the wrong base can void the warranty. Memory foam and latex need solid support (platform bed or slatted frame with slats 3 inches or less apart). Traditional box springs are incompatible with most foam mattresses. For hybrids and innersprings, box springs and platform beds both work. When in doubt, a solid platform or low-profile foundation is the most universally compatible option.
