How We Test Mattresses — Our Methodology

Our Testing Process

Every mattress review on Mattress Nut is based on real-world testing. We don't publish spec sheets from manufacturers and call them reviews. Here's exactly how we evaluate every mattress that appears on this site.

We Buy at Retail Price

We purchase every mattress through the same channels you would — the brand's website or an authorized retailer. No manufacturer samples, no pre-production units, no "review copies." This matters because production samples can differ from what consumers receive. When we say a mattress costs $1,395, it's because we paid $1,395.

14-Night Minimum Testing

Each mattress gets a minimum of 14 nights of testing by at least two different sleepers. We test across sleeping positions (back, side, stomach, combination) and body types (120-250+ lbs). Some mattresses get 30+ nights when initial results are borderline or when we need seasonal data (particularly for cooling claims).

What We Measure

Our testing covers five core areas with specific measurement methods:

1. Temperature and Cooling

  • Surface temperature measured with infrared thermometer at hourly intervals
  • Room held at 72°F throughout testing
  • Both "hot sleeper" and "neutral sleeper" testers
  • Humidity sensors placed under the sleeper to measure moisture management

2. Spinal Alignment and Pressure

  • Visual assessment of spinal alignment in side and back sleeping positions
  • Subjective pressure point scoring (shoulders, hips, lower back)
  • Partner disturbance testing with accelerometers

3. Durability

  • Edge support testing at 90 and 180+ days
  • Sag measurement with a weighted roller over time
  • Cover and material degradation assessment

4. Motion Isolation

  • Glass of water test (simple but effective visual)
  • Partner movement logging during overnight testing
  • Accelerometer readings at 6-inch, 12-inch, and 24-inch distances from impact

5. Value Assessment

  • Price-per-year calculation based on expected lifespan
  • Comparison to similarly-priced alternatives
  • Trial period length and return process quality
  • Warranty terms and real-world claim experience

Our Rating System

We use a 10-point scale for individual categories, but we don't reduce a mattress to a single number. A mattress that scores 9.2 for cooling might score 6.5 for edge support — and both matter depending on your needs. Our recommendations always specify who a mattress is best for, not just whether it's "good."

Editorial Independence

Mattress Nut earns revenue through affiliate commissions when you purchase a mattress through our links. This does not influence our ratings or recommendations. We've given negative reviews to mattresses from brands whose affiliate programs pay higher commissions. We've recommended budget options over premium ones when the data supported it.

Key editorial policies:

  • No pay-for-placement. Brands cannot pay to appear in our "best of" lists.
  • No manufacturer-written content. Every word is written by our editorial team.
  • Affiliate links are clearly disclosed. Every page with affiliate links includes a disclosure statement.
  • Corrections are transparent. If we update a review due to new information, we note it.

Meet the Team

Our reviewers include certified sleep coaches, back pain specialists, and — most importantly — people who've spent decades actually sleeping on mattresses. We believe the best mattress reviewer is someone who's dealt with real sleep problems, not someone who reads press releases.
