Most modern mattresses should be rotated, not flipped — but knowing which is which (and when to do it) extends mattress lifespan by 2–5 years. Here's everything you need to know.
Can Your Mattress Be Flipped?
| Mattress Type | Flip? | Rotate? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional innerspring (older style) | Yes | Yes | Designed with two sleep sides |
| Memory foam | No | Yes | Support core must stay on bottom |
| Latex foam | No (usually) | Yes | Some flippable models exist |
| Modern hybrid | No | Yes | Coil foundation must stay on bottom |
| Flippable models (Zenhaven, Plank, Saatva Loom & Leaf) | Yes | Yes | Explicitly designed for both sides |
Rotation Schedule
- New mattress (first year): Rotate every 2–3 months to even out initial compression
- Established mattress: Rotate every 6 months (spring and fall is an easy trigger to remember)
- Flippable mattress: Flip AND rotate every 6 months — alternating which action comes first
How to Rotate a Mattress (One Person)
- Remove all bedding
- Stand at the foot of the bed, grip the mattress corners
- Slide mattress toward you until one end hangs off the bed
- Walk to the side and push the mattress 90° on the box spring
- Push remaining end off the side and complete the 180° rotation
- Two people is always easier — each take one end and rotate in tandem
How to Flip a Mattress (Two People)
- Remove all bedding and have a clear path on both sides of the bed
- Stand on opposite sides — Person A grabs the near side handle, Person B grabs the far side handle
- Tilt the mattress up to a vertical position between you
- One person steps back, other steps in — lower to the opposite side
- Rotate 180° to put head-to-foot as well (prevents one end wearing more)
Signs Your Mattress Needs Rotation
- Body impressions you can feel when lying down
- Waking with stiffness in the same position as where impressions form
- Unevenness between your side and your partner's side
- More than 6 months since last rotation
FAQ
How often should you flip a mattress?
For flippable mattresses: flip every 6 months. For all other mattresses (memory foam, hybrid, most modern mattresses): do not flip — they're designed with a specific bottom support layer. Instead, rotate 180° head-to-foot every 6 months. Check your mattress manufacturer's recommendations as they may vary.
Can I flip a memory foam mattress?
No — memory foam mattresses are one-sided. The comfort layer (memory foam) must be on top; the high-density support base must be on the bottom. Flipping a memory foam mattress means sleeping on the hard support base with no comfort layer — you'll feel nothing but a stiff, flat surface. Only rotate memory foam mattresses, never flip.
Does rotating a mattress actually help?
Yes — significantly. Most people sleep in the same position every night, concentrating wear on specific zones. Rotating 180° moves these high-wear zones to previously low-wear areas, extending mattress life by 2-4 years. Studies show rotated mattresses maintain support ratings 30-40% longer than unrotated mattresses in comparable conditions.
