A mattress foundation is the base your mattress rests on — and the wrong one can void your warranty, cause premature sagging, or dramatically change how your mattress feels. This guide covers every foundation type and which works with which mattress.
Types of Mattress Foundations
| Type | Height | Best For | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional box spring | 8–9" | Innerspring mattresses | $100–400 |
| Low-profile box spring | 4–5" | Innerspring + modern heights | $100–350 |
| Solid wood foundation | 4–9" | Foam, latex, all types | $150–500 |
| Slatted platform base | 2–6" | All mattress types (slats ≤3") | $200–600 |
| Adjustable base | 8–14" | All types, medical/comfort upgrade | $800–3,000+ |
| Bunkie board | 1–2" | Bunk beds, platform frames | $50–150 |
Foundation Requirements by Mattress Type
Memory Foam Mattresses
Require a solid or slatted foundation with slats no more than 3 inches apart. Traditional box springs void most foam warranties because the springs allow the foam to flex and sag between coils. Amerisleep, Puffy, and Sweetnight all specify platform or solid foundation in their warranty terms.
Latex Mattresses
Same requirements as foam — solid or slatted platform, slats ≤3". Natural latex is heavier (90–120 lbs for queen) so the foundation needs substantial weight support. PlushBeds recommends their solid wood Bora foundation specifically built for latex weight.
Hybrid Mattresses
Most hybrids work with slatted platform beds with adequate slat spacing. Check the specific warranty — some brands specify slats ≤2.5" rather than 3".
Innerspring Mattresses
Work with box springs, platform beds, and solid foundations. Traditional brands (Saatva Classic, Sealy) often recommend a matching box spring. Modern innerspring mattresses usually work equally well on a slatted platform.
Adjustable Bases — The Premium Option
Adjustable bases (also called adjustable bed frames) allow head and foot elevation — from zero-gravity position (slightly elevated head and legs) to full sitting position. They work with foam, latex, and flexible hybrid mattresses. See the best adjustable bed frame guide for top picks. Saatva's adjustable foundation includes Bluetooth controls and USB charging.
FAQ
What is the difference between a mattress foundation and a box spring?
A traditional box spring contains coil springs and is designed for innerspring mattresses. A mattress foundation is a solid or slatted base designed for foam and latex mattresses. Using a box spring under a foam mattress can void the warranty.
Do I need a foundation for my mattress?
Yes — most mattress warranties require proper foundation support. Without it, the mattress can sag prematurely. Even if you have a bed frame, a foundation provides the flat, supported surface mattresses need.
What foundation does Amerisleep recommend?
Amerisleep recommends their own Amerisleep Platform Bed or any solid/slatted platform with slats no more than 3 inches apart. They specify that box springs are not compatible with their foam mattresses.
