Flat Sheet Dimensions and Why They Matter

Flat sheets are measured in their unfolded, laid-flat state. The dimensions assume 10 to 15 inches of overhang on each side of the mattress for tucking. If you prefer a hotel-style tight tuck on all four sides, the standard flat sheet provides adequate overhang for queen and king beds. If you do not tuck, oversized flat sheets create visual bulk you may or may not want.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are all the standard sheet sizes?

The six standard US sheet sizes are: twin (38x75 in), twin XL (38x80 in), full/double (54x75 in), queen (60x80 in), standard king (76x80 in), and California king (72x84 in). Each requires fitted sheets with matching pocket depth for the mattress thickness.

What is the difference between queen and king sheet sizes?

A queen mattress is 60x80 inches; a standard king is 76x80 inches. The king is 16 inches wider but the same length. King sheets are not interchangeable with queen sheets. The fitted sheet dimensions differ by 16 inches in width.

What pocket depth do I need for a thick mattress?

Measure your actual mattress height and add 2 to 3 inches for grip margin. A 12-inch mattress needs at least 14 to 15-inch pocket depth. A 15-inch pillow-top needs 17 to 18 inches. A 14-inch mattress with a 3-inch topper (effectively 17 inches) needs 19 to 21-inch extra-deep pockets.

Are full and queen sheets the same size?

No. A full (double) mattress is 54 inches wide; a queen is 60 inches wide. Full sheets on a queen bed will not grip corners properly on the fitted sheet, and the flat sheet will be 6 inches too narrow per side. Never substitute full sheets for queen.

What sheet size does a split king need?

A split king is two twin XL mattresses side by side. You need two twin XL fitted sheets (39x80 inches each). A standard king fitted sheet does not work because split king mattresses can move independently and each half needs its own securely fitted sheet.
