CertiPUR-US is the most widely recognized certification for polyurethane foam used in mattresses, furniture, and bedding. It certifies that foam has been tested and found to meet standards for emissions, content, and durability. Over 100 foam manufacturers and thousands of mattress brands carry this certification.

What Does CertiPUR-US Certify?

CertiPUR-US testing, conducted by accredited third-party laboratories, confirms that certified foam:

  • Contains no ozone depletes: No CFC, HCFC, or HFC propellants that harm the ozone layer
  • Contains no prohibited flame retardants: No PBDE, TDCPP, or TCEP — chemicals linked to health and environmental concerns
  • Contains no mercury, lead, or heavy metals: Within strict regulatory limits
  • Contains no formaldehyde: Zero detectable formaldehyde at time of testing
  • Contains no phthalates: Regulated phthalates below 0.1% per CPSC standards
  • Low VOC emissions: Volatile organic compound emissions measured at less than 0.5 ppm — well below indoor air quality guidelines
  • Durability: Tested to maintain 90% height after 30,000 compression cycles

What CertiPUR-US Does NOT Cover

CertiPUR-US only certifies polyurethane foam — it does not certify latex, springs, fabric covers, or other mattress components. A mattress can be CertiPUR-US certified while still containing other materials (like fiberglass fire barriers or non-organic cotton covers) that are not subject to this certification. It also does not test for all possible chemicals — certification scope is limited to the specific compounds listed above.

Major Brands With CertiPUR-US Certified Foam

  • Casper
  • Purple
  • Nectar
  • Puffy
  • Leesa
  • DreamCloud
  • Helix
  • Bear
  • Amerisleep
  • Sweetnight

Saatva, Avocado, PlushBeds, and other natural/organic brands typically use GOLS-certified natural latex rather than polyurethane foam, so CertiPUR-US does not apply to them — but they have stricter certifications (GOLS, GOTS) for their latex and cotton components.

CertiPUR-US vs GREENGUARD Gold

Feature CertiPUR-US GREENGUARD Gold
What it covers Polyurethane foam only Finished product (whole mattress)
VOC testing Yes Yes (stricter limits)
Who it is best for General consumer Sensitive groups (children, hospitals)
Cost of certification Lower Higher
Brands Wide range Select premium brands

GREENGUARD Gold has stricter VOC limits specifically calibrated for sensitive populations — children, elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. If you are buying a mattress for a child's room or someone with chemical sensitivities, GREENGUARD Gold certification provides a higher assurance level than CertiPUR-US alone.

Is CertiPUR-US Certification Enough?

For most adults, CertiPUR-US foam is considered safe for standard bedroom use. It significantly reduces chemical exposure compared to uncertified foam. However:

  • If you have multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), look for mattresses that are also GREENGUARD Gold and Made Safe certified
  • If you want fully organic materials, look for GOTS (organic cotton/wool) and GOLS (organic latex) certifications — which go beyond foam testing
  • If you are primarily concerned about off-gassing smell, CertiPUR-US certification significantly reduces but does not eliminate new mattress smell — airing out for 24–72 hours is still recommended

Is CertiPUR-US certification important when buying a mattress?

Yes — it confirms absence of harmful flame retardants, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and phthalates, plus low VOC emissions. It is a minimum standard for any foam-containing mattress.

Does CertiPUR-US mean the mattress is organic?

No. CertiPUR-US certifies foam is free from specific harmful chemicals. Organic certifications use GOTS (cotton/wool) and GOLS (latex) standards, which are completely separate.

Can a mattress have CertiPUR-US and still contain fiberglass?

Yes. CertiPUR-US only certifies the polyurethane foam layer. Always check separately for the fire barrier material used in the rest of the mattress.

How long is CertiPUR-US certification valid?

One year — renewed annually through continued testing, providing ongoing quality assurance rather than a one-time certification.
