How we compared

What a Serta crib mattress actually is

Serta does not build crib mattresses itself. Delta Children — the nursery furniture maker behind Delta, Jeeps wagons and several licensed baby brands — lists Serta among its brand partnerships, and every Serta crib and toddler mattress on the market is sold through that channel. Serta's own site confirms the range exists and points shoppers to Amazon for it. Practically, that means you are buying a Delta Children mattress with Serta's engineering and badge on it, at Delta Children's warranty terms.

That matters when you shop, because the price, the warranty and the return rules all come from Delta Children, not from the Serta you know for adult mattresses. It also means the range is wide: fiber cores, innerspring units and foam builds, full-size and mini, all sold under one name.

The federal rules that decide the purchase

A crib mattress in the United States is a regulated children's product, not a soft good. The rule is 16 CFR part 1241, which incorporates ASTM F2933. Mattresses made after 15 August 2022 must meet ASTM F2933-21 with CPSC modifications; those made after 3 May 2026 must meet ASTM F2933-25. Every one has to be tested by a third-party, CPSC-accepted laboratory and covered by a Children's Product Certificate citing “16 CFR part 1241 – Crib mattresses”.

What the standard actually polices:

• Surface firmness. The rule exists to prevent suffocation from an overly soft mattress — one of the hazards CPSC names directly.
• Fit. Entrapment from a mattress that does not sit correctly inside the crib is a named hazard. A full-size crib measures 52⅜ ± ⅝ in by 28 ± ⅝ in, and full-size mattresses must pass a size compression test.
• Exposed coil springs. Laceration risk from springs working through the cover.
• Seam stitching, openings, sharp points and edges, small parts.
• Chemistry. Lead in surface coatings at or below 90 ppm, total lead at or below 100 ppm, regulated phthalates at or below 1,000 ppm, plus flammability limits: char length no greater than 2 in in the smoldering test, peak heat release no higher than 200 kW over the 30-minute open-flame test, and total heat no higher than 15 MJ in the first 10 minutes.
• Labeling. Manufacturer or importer name, a US contact address and phone number, model name or number, and date of manufacture, permanently affixed, plus a tracking label and a product registration form.

CPSC's own summary of the rule reports 139 deaths in the final rule's data, all potentially related to mattress compatibility factors such as firmness, fit, thickness and floor structure. That is the whole argument for buying a purpose-built crib mattress instead of putting an adult mattress in the crib: air mattresses and adult mattresses are explicitly warned against. For anything beyond the regulation — your baby's specific health situation — talk to your pediatrician.

If you are shopping for an aftermarket mattress to fit a play yard or a non-full-size crib, the rule is stricter: the product must state which crib or play yard models it fits, on the packaging, the label and the instructions. CPSC says a generic compatibility claim based on size alone cannot meet it, and that you should not use supplemental padding or a topper in the sleep space at all.

The lineup, construction and prices

These are the prices listed on Delta Children's Serta collection page for the full-size crib and toddler models, with the warranty printed on each product page. The full-size mattresses all measure 27.5 × 52 in and under 6 in thick.

Below that ladder sit the budget and specialty sizes: fiber models from $59.00, a dual-sided recycled-bottle fiber core at $79.99, and mini-crib mattresses from $39.99 (a 3-in Perfect Embrace) up to $62.99 for the SleepTrue 4-in, which is 24 × 38 × 4 in and explicitly not designed for standard cribs or Pack 'n Plays.

Which model I would put in which nursery

My everyday pick: the Serta Tranquility Eco Firm, $129.99. It is the point where the construction stops being a flat fiber pad and starts being a real mattress: 120 coils, a full-perimeter border wire that keeps the edges from collapsing when your toddler stands on them, air vents so the cover does not hold damp air, and a 50-year limited warranty. It is also dual-sided, so you flip it when you move from crib to toddler bed instead of buying again.

If you want the cheapest safe buy: the Perfect Slumber Firm, $59.00. A firm high-density fiber core, labeled infant and toddler sides, a durable laminated vinyl cover, 12 lb, and a 7-year warranty. There is nothing luxurious in it, and nothing in it that can go wrong either.

If you want the longest warranty on the shelf: the Perfect Balance Deluxe Firm, $179.00. 160 coils, corner supports, a waterproof and stain-resistant cover, and a limited lifetime warranty. The toddler side gets Cool Action gel foam, so the second child gets a slightly softer surface than the first.

If cooling is the whole conversation for you: the iComfort EverCool, $249.99. Serta's crib version of its adult foam line — soy-enhanced foam on the infant side, EverCool Gfx memory foam on the toddler side, a knit cover with a medical-grade waterproof backing, and CertiPUR-US certified foam. It is also the lightest full-size model here at 11 lb.

If your crib is a mini or a Pack 'n Play, none of these. The full-size models are 27.5 × 52 in. The SleepTrue 4-in mini is 24 × 38 × 4 in and Serta says it is not for standard cribs or Pack 'n Plays — buy for the sleep product you actually own.

Firmness: what the infant side and the toddler side are for

Every full-size Serta crib mattress is sold as a two-stage product, and the two stages are not a marketing flourish. The infant side is the firm one, on purpose. CPSC's rule names suffocation from overly soft surfaces as a hazard it exists to prevent, and Serta's own buying guidance says an infant mattress should be thin and firm and that air mattresses and adult mattresses are explicitly warned against.

The toddler side is where the comfort layers live — memory foam on the Perfect Start Supreme and the Cheery Days, gel foam on the Perfect Balance Deluxe, a cotton layer on the Tranquility Eco Firm, plain woven fabric on the Nightstar Balance. The label on the product tells you which side is which; keep it. Based on the firmness each model advertises, I would keep a baby on the infant side until the manufacturer's stated toddler stage, and only then flip it.

On airflow: a breathable or vented cover is a cleaning and drying feature, not a safety rating, and the standard does not grade mattresses on it. On waterproofing: every Serta model here carries a waterproof vinyl or backed cover, which is the single feature that most affects how long the mattress lasts through leaks and spit-up. If the cover on what you own fails, a crib mattress protector is the fix — and it is a separate safety check, because anything you add changes the fit.

Fit before features

Measure the inside of your crib before you compare anything else. A standard full-size crib interior is 52⅜ ± ⅝ in by 28 ± ⅝ in, and the Serta full-size models are 27.5 × 52 in with square corners, which is what closes the gap that causes entrapment. If your crib is older, non-standard, or a play yard, the mattress has to say so on its label — a size guess is not compatibility. One contradiction worth knowing about: Serta's own crib buying guide says only the Tranquility Eco Select is GREENGUARD Gold certified, while Delta Children's current product pages state that all Serta crib mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold certified. Check the certification on the label of the exact model you buy rather than assuming it from the range description.

Warranty, returns and where to buy

Warranty ranges from a 1-year limited on the SleepTrue mini to limited lifetime on the Perfect Balance Deluxe Firm and the iComfort EverCool, with 7, 20, 25, 35 and 50-year steps in between. Warranty is written by the manufacturer, and it covers defects, not a change of mind.

Returns are the part people get wrong. On DeltaChildren.com, most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery — but the policy lists fridge-free categories of final sale that include “Mattress and Bedding Items”. A crib mattress bought there is not returnable once it is yours. That is the honest trade-off behind a $59 mattress: the price is low because you are not being given a trial. Delta Children ships only to the contiguous 48 states and advertises free shipping sitewide, with charges possible for oversized items to out-of-network zip codes through its private carrier.

You will also find the line at other retailers — Delta Children's own listing tags specific Serta models to Target, Walmart, Amazon and buybuy BABY, and Serta's site sends its own crib shoppers to Amazon. Buy where your return terms are clearest, because that is where the risk sits.

What if you would rather buy a mattress you can send back?

Serta is the value answer, not the trial answer. The closest paid alternative that solves the returns problem is the Saatva Crib Mattress at $359: a coil unit with reinforced double edge support, a baby side advertised as extra firm and a toddler side as firm, a removable washable organic-cotton-blend cover, GREENGUARD Gold certification and a natural thistle flame barrier that contains no fiberglass. Saatva lists a 45-night return window and free returns, and a lifetime warranty on its mattresses.

The comparison is simple and it is about risk, not comfort: Serta charges you $59 to $179 and takes the mattress back out of the conversation; Saatva charges $359 and gives you 45 nights to change your mind. With a newborn arriving in three weeks, that difference is worth more than the gel foam.
