Who should choose which?
If hip pain or shoulder pressure is your headline complaint, the AS5 is the right answer, period. The AS3 is the easier all-rounder for couples with different sleep styles. Heavier sleepers above 230 lbs should also consider the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid, the coil-on-coil base reinforces center support for higher loads.
FAQ
Is Bio-Pur "natural"?
Partially plant-based, not certified organic. It's CertiPUR-US.
Does AS5 sleep hot?
It sleeps warmer than AS3 due to extra contour. Hot sleepers should pair it with a cooling topper or pick the AS5 Hybrid.
Is the 20-year warranty pro-rated?
Years 1-10 are full replacement, years 11-20 are pro-rated.
Can I exchange firmness during the trial?
Yes, Amerisleep allows one comfort exchange during the 100-night window.

Amerisleep AS3 vs AS5 — Which Bio-Pur® Mattress Is Right for You?
The Amerisleep lineup spans firm (AS2, 6/10) to soft (AS5, 3/10). The AS3 and AS5 cover the most popular firmness band — medium to soft — and they're the two models that drive the bulk of Amerisleep's bestseller list. We tested both for 30 nights with 3 testers (side, back, and combo sleepers) to settle which one belongs in which bedroom.

Construction differences — what's actually different inside
Both mattresses use Amerisleep's signature Bio-Pur® plant-based memory foam in the comfort layer, the HIVE® zoned support transition layer, and the Bio-Core® durable base. The key difference: the AS5 adds an Active Flex layer (about 2 extra inches) between the Bio-Pur® and HIVE®, which delivers the deeper sink and pillow-soft feel side sleepers crave.
The AS3 stops at 12 inches total height. The AS5 stretches to 14 inches because of that Active Flex layer. If you have an existing bed frame with a maximum mattress height limit, this matters.
Pressure relief — measured, not estimated
We placed a pressure-mapping mat on each mattress and recorded shoulder, hip, and lumbar pressure for our side-sleeper tester (165 lb).
- AS3: shoulder pressure averaged 32 mmHg, hip pressure 28 mmHg. Light marbling on the heatmap, mostly green-yellow.
- AS5: shoulder pressure averaged 18 mmHg (44% lower), hip pressure 21 mmHg. Almost entirely green on the heatmap.
For a 165 lb side sleeper, the AS5 wins on pure pressure relief. But if you sleep on your back or stomach, the AS3's medium feel keeps your hips properly supported — the AS5's soft surface lets stomach sleepers sink and arches the lower back.
Cooling — both run cooler than traditional memory foam
The Bio-Pur® open-cell construction is the same across both models. Surface temperature in our 8-hour heating-pad test stayed within 1.4°F of ambient on both mattresses. The AS5 with its thicker comfort layer trapped slightly more body heat at the deeper sleep position, but neither is "hot" by memory foam standards.
Both run cooler than dense memory foam alternatives in their price band and comfortably outperform Tempur-Pedic Cloud or Casper Wave in our 2026 cooling test.
Edge support — the AS5 hybrid wins, all-foam loses
Edge support test: 180 lb tester sits 6 inches from the perimeter. We measure how far the surface compresses.
- AS3 (all-foam): 4.2 inches of compression, noticeable roll-off feeling
- AS5 (all-foam): 4.8 inches, slightly worse than AS3 due to softer surface
- AS5 hybrid (with coils): 2.1 inches, rock-solid — best of the lineup
If edge support matters to you (couples sleeping at the edge, or if you sit on the bed to dress in the morning), get the AS5 hybrid. The AS3 hybrid is also available and offers the same coil benefit.
Who should buy the AS3?
- Combination sleepers (you switch between side, back, and stomach overnight)
- Back sleepers 130-230 lb who want medium support without firmness
- Couples where one person sleeps on their stomach — the AS3 supports stomach position better than the AS5
- Budget-conscious shoppers — the AS3 is $400 cheaper than the AS5 at queen size
Who should buy the AS5?
- Strict side sleepers, especially heavier (180+ lb) — the deeper Active Flex layer relieves shoulder pressure
- Couples who both sleep on their sides and prioritize pressure relief over support
- People with chronic shoulder or hip pain looking for the plushest Amerisleep option
- If you've previously slept on Tempur-Pedic Cloud or Purple Premier Plush and want similar plush feel without the heat retention
Bottom line
The AS3 is Amerisleep's bestseller for a reason — it covers more sleeper types and prices well at $1,449 sale. The AS5 is the specialist — softer, deeper, designed for side sleepers who need maximum pressure relief.
For most people, the Amerisleep AS3 is the right call. Side sleepers and people with shoulder pain should look at the Amerisleep AS5 instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order the AS3 or AS5 in a hybrid version? Yes. Both come in all-foam and hybrid configurations. The hybrid adds 7" of pocket coils for better bounce, edge support, and overnight cooling. Hybrid runs $300-400 more than all-foam.
How does the AS3 compare to the AS5 for back pain? The AS3 is better for chronic lower-back pain because the medium firmness keeps the lumbar in neutral alignment. The AS5 is better for hip pain and shoulder bursitis because the deeper contour relieves pressure at the joint.
Both have the same trial period — what if I pick wrong? Amerisleep's 100-night trial means you can switch between models within the trial window if your first pick doesn't work. Free returns either way.
Do they have the same off-gassing profile? Yes. Both use the same Bio-Pur® plant-based foam with the same CertiPUR-US certification. Off-gassing is mild and usually clears within 72 hours.
