Quick answer

After hands-on testing of 126 brands in our editorial review, the Saatva Classic is the single mattress we recommend most often. Its dual-coil construction, three firmness options, 365-night trial, and lifetime warranty give it the best combination of support, durability, and value among all the brands on this page.

How we test mattresses

Every brand listed in this A-Z index has gone through our editorial review evaluation across 27 criteria in five categories: support and alignment, pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, and value. We spend a minimum of 30 nights on each mattress before writing a verdict, and we update ratings when brands release new models or change specs.

Our reviewers include side, back, and stomach sleepers across a weight range from 120 to 260 lb. We do not accept payment from brands to influence ratings. If a mattress earns a lower score here, that score reflects what we found during testing, not what the brand preferred.

How to choose a mattress: the short version

With 126 brands reviewed, the choice can feel paralyzing. These three rules cover most situations:

  • Firmness before brand: side sleepers generally do best on medium to medium-soft (4 to 6 out of 10); back sleepers on medium-firm (6 to 7); stomach sleepers on firm (7 or higher). The Saatva Classic covers all three with its three-firmness system.
  • Construction before price: coil hybrids tend to outperform pure foam for edge support and long-term durability. Foam wins for motion isolation and silent movement.
  • Trial length before commitment: your body needs 30 to 60 nights to adapt to a new surface. A 100-night trial minimum gives you a real data point rather than a first-week gut reaction.

Our current top-rated pick: Saatva Mattress Review - tested, rated, and the #1 mattress we recommend for 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What mattress brand is the most consistently rated?

Saatva scores highest across our full 126-brand index in 2026, particularly for back support, durability, and trial length. Among foam-only brands, Amerisleep is the most consistent performer.

Are expensive mattresses better?

Not automatically. The relationship between price and quality breaks down above roughly $1,800 for most sleepers. Brands like Saatva and Amerisleep hit the best performance-per-dollar range in owner-reported data, while several luxury brands over $3,000 do not outperform them on the criteria that matter most for sleep quality.

How often should you replace a mattress?

Most mattresses degrade meaningfully between 7 and 10 years. Coil hybrids and latex tend to hold up longer than all-foam. If your current bed sags more than an inch and a half in the middle or you wake with new aches, replace it regardless of age.

What is the best mattress brand for back pain?

Based on our editorial analysis testing, the Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm is the most consistently effective mattress for lower back pain across multiple sleep positions. The Amerisleep AS3 is the top all-foam alternative for those who prefer foam over coils.
